”I don’t wanna work today
Maybe I just wanna stay
Just take it easy cause there’s no stress” Laurent Wolf
This is just one of the hits of this summer… In discos, pubs, cafe, in the cars in the traffic of the city, in silence of the nature, we always accompagne our life with a melody, a sound which can identify your interior moment, or better, the Moment. But the development of the technology has changed the idea of the ”listening music”: the concert or the ”Agnus dei” in the Cathedral of the XV,XVI,XVII,XVIII,XIXth centuries are only the utipic concept of the modern music that must be commercial, easy to be listend by the people in the new ”web line” dimension of the world. And how to semplify the transport of milion and milion of sounds, vibrations all around the world in our i-pod, mp3s, i-phones, CDs ecc? Simple, there’s the codification of the informations! ehm…and what’s the codification of information?g.e. if we have pages and pages and pages of mental thoughts to express this to world we must codify all our impression in a common language, transformate our ideas in words, sounds, artistic attacks…isn’t? the same thing is for the music, our ideas or thoughts are the sounds and the words are the bites…For the rappresentation of the audio signals in fact there are two important passages:
- the sampling, which consists in the estraction of a groups of samples from a linear and continuos signal (that’s one of the consequences of the Nyquist’s theorem)
- the quantization: every sample must me converted in a digital number ( this process is called Analogic-Digital conversion and is done by a component called ADC Analog to Digital Converter)
And in this mode a ”tunz tunz tunz” disco piece is semplify in a digital sequence of numbers. But to not use giga and giga bytes to conserve our songs, exist a techinque that allows us to compress our files. There are two tipes of compressions:conservatives and no-conservatives.The mp3’s format is a type of non-conservative compression; we can convert an audio signal in 44100 samples/seconds every sample is 2 bytes and there are usually 2 stereo channels (44100 x 2 x 2 = 176400 bytes every second). With this technique we can compress the file 10-14 times: a 32 MB audio sound in mp3 format can be 3.2 MB…and for our i-pods this is very different…but you can ask me…wich is the real difference?
the real difference is that the low-frequence sound aren’t rappresented, the signal isn’t of the same quality of a normal audio file, in substance, it can’t make a perfect riprodution of the signal.
This is the big difference from the 1979’s LP ”The wall” sound and the digital sinth of this song…but for our commercial times is sufficient a file of 3.2 MB to remember a moment, or better, the Moment, when the sound had a smooth, the vynil’s smooth and when the music make an interior life question…Is our life a melody?…
